Palo Verde National Park: The area is comprised of both deciduous and evergreen tropical dry forest, brackish and fresh water wetlands, mangrove swamps, and the tidal estuarine ecosystem of the lower Tempisque River. If you want to experience wildlife, take a boat tour in this beautiful national park - plenty of birds, white face and howler monkeys, crocodiles, etc. Located 1.5 hrs away from Tamarindo, it’s a great family tour. Price of the tour if you drive is $35 plus $6 to enter the park. The cost with a driver is $92. Both rates include lunch.

Cartagena Canopy Tour: 10 cable zip line tour on one of the last dry forests in Guanacaste. You can also enjoy a hiking trail if you are up for a walk. Located ½ hr from Tamarindo. Price of the tour is $35. Free pick up upon request.

Buena Vista and Borinquen Lodges: Both are located next to the Rincon de la Vieja National Park and volcano, just outside Liberia. If you are looking for a full day of activities, this is your tour. You’ll find canopy tours, horseback riding, hiking trails, waterfalls, mud baths, hot springs, and much more. Located 2.5 hrs from Tamarindo. Rates range from $85 to $180 (depending on transportation and location) and include all activities plus lunch.

Take a guided tour by boat into the estuary of the Rio Matapalo. The salt water jungle is protected as the Tamarindo Wildlife Reserve. In the 1,500-acre maze of narrow waterway and small islands all five of Costa Rica's mangrove species are represented. The thickets give shelter to many species of birds and animals. Early hours are the best to see wildlife. While gliding through the waters you might spot crocodiles basking on a sand bank, or their pairs of watchful eyes peering out of the water. Price per person, $35.

Snorkeling is outstanding in the crystal clear waters in front of Playa Conchal, north of Tamarindo. A white coral sand underneath gives a gorgeous turquoise color to the sea. If you are lucky you might spot turtles or manta rays. Price depends on duration and type of tour. You can actually rent the equipment and do it yourself.

Just offshore from Flamingo, the Catalina Islands are considered among the most attractive dive sites in Costa Rica. It is an area where divers often find themselves surrounded by large schools of colorful fish. When you dive the Catalinas, you may experience swimming with abundance of manta rays and stingrays. The formations provide a spectacular variety of marine life from nudibranchs to sharks, with angel fish, jacks, snappers, grunts, octopus and eels in between. There are several dive spots with depths ranging from 40 ft. to more than 100 ft. Visibility depends upon the levels of plankton and nutrients. It varies from 20 ft. to 100 ft., with an average of 45 ft. Call for prices.
